Obituary

Murray Landrum Cawthon was laid to rest in a quite family service at Magnolia Cemetery in DeFuniak Springs, Florida on Tuesday, March 5, 2024. Mr. Cawthon was born in DeFuniak Springs on December 14, 1929. He was a pillar of the community, working at Cawthon State Bank under the guidance of his grandfather, father and then finally becoming bank president himself. He was known for his hard work, dedication and fairness to those he served. His long-time employees were loyal to him, and he regarded them as a fine and intelligent group of individuals.

Mr. Cawthon attended Florida State University and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. His hobbies included golf, fishing, hunting and bridge. His life was long and happy. He died quietly in his sleep at age 94, due to complications of pneumonia.

Landrum felt privileged to know the DeFuniak Springs citizens. More than anything he loved DeFuniak, it's people and his wife, Meda Janelle Cawthon. They were happily married for 42 years.

Mr. Cawthon is survived by his daughter; Jana L. Cooper, of Atlanta, his beloved granddaughter; Alana Janelle Cooper, of New York City, his son-in-law; Dr. Jerry D. Cooper, of Atlanta as well as his late sister Sarah Cawthon's children and their families.

In lieu of flowers, Mr. Cawthon requested donations be made in his name to the Destin Church of Christ at 150 Beach Drive, Destin, Florida 32541 and to the College Avenue Church of Christ at 337 College Avenue, DeFuniak Springs, Florida 32435.

Mr. Gordon Porter and his son Mike Porter officiated the funeral ceremony.
