Florence Ruth
Chambers Young
April 27, 1930 – September 20, 2024
Florence Ruth Chambers Young of DeFuniak Springs, Florida, went home to be with the Lord on September 20, 2024. Born on her mother's birthday, April 27, 1930, in Grand Rapids, MI, she was the second child of Kenneth Royer and Ruth Anna Swank Chambers. During her early years, her large extended family - her many aunts, uncles, and cousins - greatly influenced her life. She developed a love for music and was an avid reader. As early as 13 years old she led music in her church and as a teenager she sang in a quartet with her 3 sisters. The Chambers Sisters were often called on to sing for various events. As a teenager Florence babysat 2 of her younger cousins for her aunt on an adventurous trip out "west" that turned into spending the next school year in Montana while living with another aunt & uncle on their farm. She graduated from Winter Park High School in Winter Park Florida, and attended Bridgewater College in Bridgewater, VA, where she studied Library Science. Prior to marriage she worked in the Children's Department of the Orlando City Library. Florence had a wonderful gift of remembering the words of songs, stories and books she read - including songs and verses from as early as Kindergarten.
Florence was married to Carl E. Young for 48 years until his death. As a young person, because of the amount of work involved in both professions, she vowed to never marry a preacher or a farmer; however, God had other plans and she ended up married to both! After she & Carl moved to their farm in Ponce de Leon, Florida; he was led to become a pastor and Florence became the wife of a pastor and the wife of a farmer. She supported him and was a great asset to his ministry in churches in , Holmes, Walton and Washington Counties - often as music director and teacher, always ready to sing as requested. When Carl invited someone home for a meal, she was always ready, often heard to say, "We'll just put another potato in the pot." Raised a "city" girl she adapted to farm-life quickly. She gardened and canned vegetables, to help feed her family, friends, relatives and others who visited; she helped Carl with livestock and other aspects of farm-life. Florence even learned to bale hay on a big John Deere tractor! A woman of many talents, she was quite a seamstress, in addition to making clothing for her and her family, Florence made each of their daughter's wedding gowns; she also made their wedding cakes, along with all the reception goodies. Many birthday cakes, pies, candies and cookies were made in her kitchen.
Florence was a Christian by faith and a member of Bridge Creek Baptist Church in Ponce de Leon, Florida. Those deceased prior to her were: her parents, her husband Carl Young, Sisters Dorothy Detweiler and Phyllis Leavens, and Brother David Chambers. Surviving to cherish her memory are her children: Brenda & Johnny Mize of Port St. Joe, FL; Stephen and Linda Young of Ponce de Leon, FL; Faye & Jerry Cosson of DeFuniak Springs, FL; Kevin & Dianne Young of Ft. Pierce, FL; and Violet Kennison of Ponce de Leon, FL. Also surviving are her sisters and brother: Esther Wolfe, of Sebring, FL and Donald & Darlene Chambers of Davenport, FL; sisters-in-law: Bonnie Flick and Roline Young; grandchildren: Matthew & Janna Young, Michael & Ashley Mize, Paul & Sarah Young, Sarah Mize & fiancé Jesse Tyus, Cole & Katie Young, Caleb Cosson, Zachary Kennison, Lacey & Charles Ludlum, Amy Short, and Abbie & Steven Adams; twenty one great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
