Graveside services for Carol Artman, 95, of Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, and formerly of Indianola, MS will be at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 12, 2024, at the Greenville Cemetery in Greenville, Mississippi. Following the service, family and friends will gather at the St. Joseph Catholic Church Parish Hall at 412 Main Street, Greenville. She passed peacefully at her home, Watercrest, in Santa Rosa Beach on Sunday, June 9th, 2024.
Carol was born on November 19, 1928, in Clarksdale, MS and moved at an early age to Greenville where she graduated from Greenville High School. She met and married the love of her life, Paul Compton Artman, Sr. and they moved to Indianola. Carol cherished her role as mother to Paul, Jr. and loved being a homemaker and stay-at-home mom. Once Paul Jr. was older, Carol worked in the printing department at Lewis Grocer Company in Indianola, MS. After a successful career there, she retired from Lewis Grocer.
One of Carol's favorite roles was that of grandmother. She was Gran to 4 wonderful grandchildren and was special to all their friends. These children spent countless weekends in Indianola playing alongside Gran and Grandaddy. Later in life she extended that same love and devotion to her seven great-grandchildren. In addition, Carol was an avid card player enjoying bridge and canasta with her special group of friends.
In 2022, Carol relocated to Watercrest Assisted Living in Santa Rosa Beach, FL to be close to her family. At Watercrest, she quickly made friends and was known as the Mississippi Belle. Without delay, she began playing canasta with newfound friends there. Countless residents and staff are saddened by the loss of Carol.
Carol was a communicant of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church for most of her life and later at Saint Rita Catholic Church in Santa Rosa Beach. Carol was preceded in death by her parents, Solon and Mildred Smith; her husband, Paul Artman, Sr., her son, Paul Artman, Jr., and a grandson, Jonathan Artman. She is survived by daughter-in-law Barbara Deaton Artman; grandson Paul Artman III (Kris); granddaughter Maggie Artman Matthews (Tyler) all of Santa Rosa Beach; and granddaughter Catherine Clare Artman Hill (Waylon) of Southport, FL. She is also survived by seven great-grandchildren: Jon Walker Hill, Kennedy Carol Hill, Hollis Catherine Hill, and Eliza Rose Hill, Deaton Ty Matthews, Ella Compton Matthews, and Paul Woods Matthews. In addition, Carol is survived by her sister, Sherry Tietjens (Frank) of Madison, MS and her brother Solon Smith (Linda) of Lake Village, AR along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Arrangements are being completed by Clary Glenn Funeral Home in Freeport, FL and Burton Funeral Home in Indianola with burial in the family plot in the Greenville Cemetery. Father Sanchez will conduct the service. Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or the charity of your choice.
