Wilburn Edward Hendrix, Chief Petty Officer – United States Navy (Retired)
Born April 5,1928 in the Highfalls Community of Hartford, Alabama. Wilburn joined the Navy as a young man serving his country until he moved back to Geneva, Alabama to own and operate the Standard Oil station on South Commerce Street. Wilburn rejoined the Navy and remained serving his country around the world until he retired in 1974. After his retirement in 1974 Wilburn and his family lived in Pensacola and DeFuniak Springs, Florida before returning home to Hartford Alabama. Other than his family one of his proudest moments was to be honored as the oldest living veteran in Geneva County Alabama in 2021 at the age of 93.
Wilburn was very active in the churches in which they were members. He taught Sunday School for many years, he served as a Deacon and he joined others in his churches to work with multiple disaster relief missions in Florida through the years.
Wilburn was greatly loved by his wife, all his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, siblings, nieces, nephews and anyone who had the good fortune to know our father.
Wilburn is preceded in death by Grover Edward Hendrix – Father, Beatrice Judah Hendrix – Mother, Betty Ray Ellis – Sister, Sara Lee Hendrix – Sister, Louie Hendrix – Brother, William Loyd Hendrix – Brother, and Elliott A. Hendrix – Great Grandson.
Wilburn is survived by Mary Jo Hendrix – wife, Dorothy Pate – sister, Joseph E. Hendrix – son (Debra), Neala Joy Clifton – daughter (Tim), Sara Jill Langham – daughter (Vance), Jana Sonderreger – daughter (Bruce), Grandchildren - (by age): Joshua Hendrix, Brant Langham, Chad Sonderegger, Kari Gurden, Trey Langham, Michael Yanosy, Jeffery Hendrix, Brandy Dykes, Myriah Clifton, Cody Clifton, Alex Sonderegger, Stephen Sonderegger, and 23 Great Grandchildren.
Receiving of Friends will be held from 9:00 – 10:00 AM, Wednesday, December 14, 2022 at Clary-Glenn Funeral Home Chapel; 230 Park Avenue, DeFuniak Springs, Florida 32435.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:00 AM, Wednesday, December 14, 2022 at Clary-Glenn Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Bob Greene officiating.
A Graveside Service will be held at 2:30 PM, December 14, 2022 at Barrancas National Cemetery with Military Honors by the United States Navy.
