Obituary

Myron Jude Tassin, Sr., age 90, of Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, died in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida October 18th, 2023, where he'd lived with his wife of 70 years, Shirley Hill Tassin.  He was born in Long Bridge, Louisiana, in 1933 to Pliny Tassin and Emma Ducote Tassin.  Myron helped work their cotton farm with his siblings while attending Cottonport schools.

Though Cajun/Creole French was his first language, Myron excelled in English and headed for the "big city"--Baton Rouge--to obtain a Journalism degree at Louisiana State University where he was named their "outstanding male graduate".   Myron met his future wife and lifelong love, Shirley Anne Hill, then a St. Joseph's Academy student, during his time at LSU.

Myron served in the National Guard Reserves alongside close friends, old and new.  He was preceded in death by his parents and five siblings:  Joe, Helen, Bobby, Mary Anne and Sidney.  Myron is survived by his children Myron, Jr. (Mike), Tim and wife Debbie, Jay and partner Brent, and Anne Tassin Winjum and husband Brent, fifteen grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren.  Most of that group and their spouses last gathered in Miramar Beach to celebrate Shirley and Myron in February of 2023.

Shirley and Myron were thrilled to find one another and, with Baton Rouge's Bishop Borders' help, convinced their parents to permit their wedding at ages 20 and 18.  They were thereafter the closest of couples.  Myron took jobs in public relations before establishing a Baton Rouge firm of his own.  He later became an author and publisher of historical and biographical books, with Shirley as his research aide.

Myron and Shirley also invested in and improved land, homes and cabins, which they enjoyed in adventures across Louisiana, Mississippi, Colorado and the Florida Panhandle.  They were always a team and, as loving, devoted parents, shared adventures in those states with their many progeny and friends.

Myron was a devout and generous Catholic, singing in church choirs with Shirley, teaching catechism to public school students, and bringing religion home to family and friends by including befriended priests in gatherings, and driving parish nuns to engagements in New Orleans while commuting there for work.  He never tired of making new friends from all walks of life, and helping those in need, some with a dental charity he created.

Lifelong friendship and adventure were broad themes in Myron's life with Shirley, family and friends.  Typical of Cajun men, Myron shared a love of food and cooking with Shirley.  They enjoyed hosting their many friends for meals with fresh-caught seafood and hunted game.  A bit of a ham during such gatherings, Myron typically sang, played the harmonica and teased with self-deprecatory humor.  His high school nickname was "Hot"--a big name for a bayou boy with a big heart.  He will be sorely missed, always loved and never forgotten.  Here's to you, Hot!

Celebration of Life services will be held at 1:30 PM, Saturday, January 18, 2025 at Saint Rita Catholic Church; 222 Saint Rita Lane, Santa Rosa Beach, Florida; with Father Michael Hartley officiating.
