Obituary

Mr. Melvin Wiley King, age 80, passed away peacefully at his home in DeFuniak Springs, Florida on Saturday, August 5, 2023. He was born on March 1, 1943 in Neshoba County, Mississippi to James Wiley King and Ava Mae Miles King.

Melvin grew up as the son of a sharecropper in Mississippi. He spent most of his working years as a millwright in lumber mills. He was a skilled mechanic and fixer of things. He usually could be found with a project that he sometimes admitted that he shouldn't have started. He loved his family and grandchildren. After being widowed for several years, Melvin met and married Ramona, who is affectionately known as "Grandma Monie". Melvin was so happy with Ramona and the family is so thankful for the addition of her family to the King Family. Melvin was Apostolic by faith and a member of the First Apostolic Church of DeFuniak Springs, Florida where he was always willing to serve in whatever capacity he was able.

Mr. King was preceded in death by his parents; six brothers Leon King, Erskin King, James King, Jimmy Lee King, Maybrie (Red) King and Belvin (Pete) King; seven sisters Ruth Nation, Frances Ray, Bobbie Nell Burkes, Pearl Bryant Hutchison, Doris Knowles, Kathy Hall and Linda Vance; wife Gaynell Faith King; daughter Cathy Lynn Posey; son Ray King; and two grandchildren Kimberly Dawn Collins and Chad Rosamond.

Mr. King is survived by his wife Ramona McMillan King; two brothers Alfred King of Morton, Mississippi and Edward King of Forest, Mississippi; three sisters Mary Ann Jones of Philadelphia, Mississippi, Faye Smith of Forest, Mississippi and Clara Hillhouse of Leakesville, Mississippi. He is also survived by his children Barbara Marell (Dave) of Freeport, Florida, David King (Karen) of DeFuniak Springs, Florida, Teresa Williams of DeFuniak Springs, Florida, Virgil Lee Brittain of Des Moines, Iowa and Joseph MaKing (Zachary) of Kirkland, Washington. Grandpa, or Poppie, is survived by many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Melvin is also survived by his loving new additions to his family, Chester McMillan, Tommy McMillan (Tammy), Linda Smith (Greg) and David McMillan (Lisa).

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, September 9, 2023 at the First Apostolic Church of DeFuniak Springs, Florida; 440 West Orange Avenue, DeFuniak Springs, Florida 32435.
