Obituary

Lynn Earl Mayfield, DMD passed away peacefully on June 2, 2023 at the age of 87. Known as "Doc" to his many loving friends, Lynn was born on March 20, 1936 in Kirksville, Missouri and grew up in Sacramento and Louisville, Kentucky. Lynn graduated from Louisville Male High School in 1954 where he played football as an offensive guard and wore #84 on his jersey. He attended The Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina for one and half years until an early illness prevented him from being able to march with the other cadets. Lynn left The Citadel because he believed all cadets should serve equally and he did not want to be treated differently than the others because of his health. He later attended the University of Louisville, where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree and a Doctor of Dental Medicine degree. A resident of DeFuniak Springs, Florida, Lynn practiced his Christian faith as a member of the Episcopal Church. He helped establish St. Matthew's Episcopal Church in Chipley, Florida and was also very involved in St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Marianna. He has served in various capacities at St. Agatha's Episcopal Church in DeFuniak Springs including sitting on the vestry, helping initiate the Rice and Beans Ministry, and assisting his wife, Ellen, cook lunch every Sunday for the congregation for over 10 years. Lynn practiced dentistry in Florida for almost 43 years in Marianna, Bonifay, and DeFuniak Springs. He enjoyed using his skills as a dentist to help others that were less fortunate and provided many services at no cost to numerous families and individuals. His love of service and helping his community came from his father who was a family physician who traveled by horse and buggy to patients' homes to care for them, and his mother who was a registered nurse. He loved the community of DeFuniak Springs and Walton County, and was devoted to helping make the community a better place to live and work. Lynn served on the DeFuniak Springs Business & Professional Association (DBPA) Board of Directors and the Walton County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. As a creative individual, he loved being a member of Grit & Grace, the official folk life production of Walton County, and telling the stories and legends of Walton County's rich history. Lynn was a member of the committee that organized and implemented the first Victorian Ball in DeFuniak Springs, as well as the subsequent Victorian Teas. He and his wife also oversaw and gave their time and talents for almost 20 years to Christmas Reflections by spearheading the planning, designing, and decorating of Circle Drive (and the City) for the holiday season. He and Ellen were the Grand Marshals for the Fourth of July DBPA parade and they were the first King and Queen of Krewe de Yak's Mardi Gras celebrations. It was Lynn's idea many years ago to initially decorate the sidewalks of Baldwin Avenue with plants and colorful flora to brighten the experience for visitors and residents alike. Lynn enjoyed doing anything with his wife of 36 years, including helping her cook and cater hundreds of weddings and other occasions. He enjoyed sailing with his buddies, tinkering around the house, playing tricks on his dental office staff, reading about our world and histories of various cities, and reading newspapers. Lynn loved animals of all kinds – they along with small children were especially drawn to his caring and nurturing nature. Lynn's vitality for life never faltered. His life story is full. An amazing and kind dentist, a dedicated husband, a loving father and stepfather, a true friend, a role model, a teacher, a servant—he was a pillar of the community for which he loved. His happy go-lucky, fun personality followed him everywhere he went and will not be forgotten by all that he touched. There is a piece of his spirit that will live in all that loved him. He was preceded in death by his father, William Orville Mayfield, and his mother Hetabel Dodson Mayfield. Lynn is survived by his wife of 36 years Ellen Murry Mayfield of DeFuniak Springs whom was his best friend and the love of his life; sister Barbara Sue Mayfield Rosenbarger; son Stephen Mayfield (Marjorie) of Bainbridge, Georgia; son Phillip Mayfield (Kim) of Orlando, Florida; daughter Katherine Mayfield Scott (Michael) of Knoxville, Tennessee; stepdaughter Mary Chris Murry of Santa Rosa Beach, Florida; nephew James Lynn Rosenbarger; nine grandchildren, six great grandchildren, and one fur grandchild.
