Obituary

It is with deep sorrow and unfathomable love that we announce the passing of our beloved Janice Ann McLean, age 83, of Freeport Florida. Janice passed away peacefully in her home on Friday, June 12, 2026. She was born on March 13, 1943 in DeFuniak Springs, Florida to Tessie Marie Langford Norris and Curtis Cook. She attended Walton High School where she was a Majorette. Janice’s talents and career are almost too many to list. She was a career baker and used those skills for many years after leaving banking. After retiring instead of slowing down Janice decided to go back to work and worked for the Department of Transportation for 15 years. On weekends and any free time, she had she worked side by side with Billy from shrimping to running the corner cafe. Janice was the treasure for the Freeport United Methodist Church for many years and again used her understanding of finances to help others. She was a huge asset to Freeport. She served from the city Council for two terms from 2000 - 2004 and 2013 – 2017. She was the President of the Council for four years.

Janice had a huge heart and believed in giving back. From public service to volunteering she was involved in almost everything that happened in Freeport. She served on the Choctawhatchee Bay alliance Board while on the Freeport City Council and the value adjustment board for Walton County for 6+ years. She was a member of Town Planters Society of Freeport for over 20 years. She was a member of United Methodist Church and served as treasurer for many years. Janice was a driven hard worker, a precious Mother, grandmother and great grandmother, a caring and loyal friend. She was a lover of travel, shopping, Elvis and most of all her family.

Janice is preceded in death by her mother Tessie Marie Langford Norris; her father Curtis Cook; her brother, Curtis Cook Jr; her son-in-law, Gary Bryant, and her stepson Craig McLean.

Janice survived by her husband of over 40 years William L “Billy” McLean; her daughters, Carrie Bryant and Chris Jones (Alice); her stepdaughters Cheri Shields (Frankie) and Cynthia Die (David); her daughter-in-law, Rhonda McLean; grandchildren, Dustin Bryant, Zachary Bryant, Kayla Bell (Zachary), Parish Aitken (Kyle), and Dooley (James), Samantha Shields (Andrew), Brooke McLean, and Landon McLean; her great grandchildren, Zane, Luke Knox, Elijah, Kynlie, Annalee, and Jackson.

Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, June 23, 2026 at Heritage Church of Freeport; 926 County Hwy 83A W, Freeport, FL 32439 with Pastor Blake Pryor officiating.
