It is with heartfelt remembrance that we honor the life of Mr. James Joseph Smith, who peacefully departed this world on May 26, 2026, at the age of 66. Born on August 2, 1959, in Washington County, Pennsylvania, James was the cherished son of Leon Smith and Esther M. Freyman Smith.

In his recent years, James made his home in Ponce de Leon, Florida, having relocated from Nazareth, Pennsylvania. A man of deep Christian faith, he found spiritual solace and community at Destiny Worship Center. His exemplary character and dedication were recognized through his induction into the Good Shepherd Hall of Fame as its 27th honoree. James’s passion for sports was evident in his founding of the Freewheelers Sports team, which brought together many in fellowship and friendly competition.

Professionally, James was a distinguished lawyer and a successful entrepreneur. He owned and operated several businesses, including “Nurse Finders” and “Around the Clock,” both esteemed home nurse agencies, as well as Bennigan’s Restaurant. Through these ventures, he demonstrated a commendable commitment to serving others and contributing to his community.

James was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Leon and Esther Smith. He leaves behind a loving circle of cousins—Joan Pollock, Colleen Puchalo (and Bruce Puchalo, Sr.), Jimmy Freyman, Jill Svard (Freyman), along with Bruce and Stacy Puchalo—who, along with devoted caregivers, lovingly supported him throughout his journey. He cherished moments spent with his extended family, especially enjoying the company of Micah and Matthew. His love for family gatherings and vacations was a treasured part of his life.

In celebrating James Joseph Smith’s legacy, we remember a man of faith, enterprise, and warmth, whose life touched many and whose memory will endure in the hearts of all who knew him.

Celebration of Life Service will be held at a later date at Arlington Cemetery in Whitehall, Pennsylvania.
