Floyd Robert
Bussey
July 12, 1923 – November 18, 2022
Floyd Robert Bussey passed away at home in New Orleans, Louisiana, on November 18, 2022. He was 99 years old. Born on July 12, 1923, in New Bedford, Massachusetts, he was the son of the late Dr. Floyd Bussey and Dr. Edwina MacPherson.
As a young boy, Bob loved boating in Buzzards Bay and recanted a story of being on the water in his small sailboat, the spring of 1937, at the start of the America's Cup Race trials. The scale next to those sleek J-Class boats was overwhelming to his young, incredibly-blue eyes.
Two years later on Memorial Day, 1939, Bob realized that the slender, young girl standing in front of him in a park, determined to get flowers to her father's grave, was actually THE ONE. Six years later, on April 28, 1945, Ruth Simmons and Bob Bussey where married. In 1954 they moved the family to Louisiana, eventually settling in New Orleans, where they remained. Although he was raised a Congregationalist, he, Ruth, and their three children, attended St. Philip's Episcopal Church in Algiers, while in New Orleans. Ruth died on Thanksgiving Day, 2022, a mere six days after Bob passed. Ruth told her daughter, Jill, "Daddy's waiting for me." The couple had been together 84 years.
Bob graduated from University of Michigan with a Master of Science in Geology and was a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity. During World War II, while in college, Bob enlisted in the Reserve Corps and went on to service his country in the Army Air Force as a flight officer.
His career in geology spanned over four decades, the bulk of that time at Texaco, and then later on his own as an independent geologist. Bob was an Emeritus Member of The American Association of Petroleum Geologists and also a member of the New Orleans Geological Society.
There were three things Bob loved most: Ruth, his family, and the azure-blue, crystal-clear water and sugary-white sand of the beaches along 30A in the Florida panhandle. It is why he chose the Historic Gulf Cemetery in Santa Rosa Beach as their final resting place.
Bob is survived by his daughters, Jill Bussey and Jane Bussey Terry, son, David Hamilton Bussey, a son-in-law, Mark Andrew James Terry, daughter-in-law, Laura Jane Drew Bussey, three grandchildren, Jillian Simmons Terry, Chelsea Jane Bussey, George MacPherson Terry, and great-grandson, Connor Storie Bussey.
A Graveside Service will be held at 2:00 PM, Friday, December 2, 2022 at Historic Gulf Cemetery; South County Highway 393, Santa Rosa Beach, Florida 32459 with Bishop Steven Miller officiating.
Flowers are being accepted.
