Dr. Josip Marcan, born on February 13, 1938, passed away on August 16, 2026, leaving behind a legacy marked by dedication to veterinary science and animal conservation.

Dr. Marcan’s career began in Germany, where he pursued and completed his studies in Veterinary Medicine, earning his degree and becoming a licensed veterinarian. His passion for animal welfare and his professional expertise led him to his life’s work: the ownership and operation of Marcan Tiger Preserves in Ponce de Leon, Florida. Under his stewardship, the preserve became known for exemplary animal care and for Dr. Marcan’s unique skill in training tigers. His commitment to the wellbeing and protection of these remarkable animals reflected his deep respect for wildlife and underscored a long career of specialized service within his field.

Beyond his professional achievements, Dr. Marcan was guided by his Catholic faith, which shaped his approach to his work and relationships alike. His presence in the community extended not only through his renowned career but also through the connections he cherished with family and friends.

He is survived by his son Drazen Pal, and his daughter Amy McCormick (Paul). His memory carries forward in the lives of his grandchildren: Zoey, Brandon, Riley, Tori, and Charli Jo. He is also fondly remembered by his special niece, Jasenka Zovko; his special trainer, Andrew Spolyar; and his fur babies Cigan, Lobo, and Garich. Dr. Marcan was preceded in death by his father Franjo Marcan, his mother Reza Vrlec Marcan and his brother Antun Marcan.

Dr. Josip Marcan’s dedication, knowledge, and compassionate nature leave a lasting impression on all who knew him and on the countless animals whose lives he touched.
