Obituary

Debbie Johnson Proffitt, born December 2, 1956, was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and faithful follower of Jesus Christ whose love, kindness, and servant’s heart touched countless lives. She graduated from Walton High School in 1975 and soon began her career working at a local nursing home, where her caring nature was evident from the start. Later, she worked for Consolidated Ace Hardware for 18 years, where she became known not only for her dedication and hard work but also for her compassion toward animals. Debbie lovingly cared for stray cats around the store, especially a cat named Smoky, who often stayed in the feed room and held a special place in her heart.

Debbie was proceeded in death by her parents, Burl Richard Lee Johnson and Iola Wallace Johnson; and two sisters, Jeanette Adams and Lynette “Pat” Johnson.

Debbie was the beloved wife of Bobby Joe Proffitt and a loving mother to her son, Joe Proffitt. She dearly loved her daughter-in-law, Amber Proffitt, who was a treasured member of the family. Debbie was a proud grandmother to Makenna Proffitt, Chandler Proffitt, Daisy Proffitt, Briston Smith, and Annabelle Smith. She is survived by her sisters, Mable (Matt) Youell of Tennessee, Marilyn Bo (Ronnie) McLendon of DeFuniak Springs. Her family was the joy of her life, and she cherished every opportunity to spend time with them.

A devoted homemaker and true homebody, Debbie found her greatest joy at her home on Juniper Lake. She loved flowers, plants, gardening, and the beauty of God’s creation. Her compassion extended to every living creature. She adored her cat, Bug, faithfully fed the birds each day, and welcomed ducks and geese into her yard. Throughout the Juniper Lake community, Debbie was known as the person who cared for the wildlife, always making sure animals were fed, protected, and loved.

Above all else, Debbie was a Christian by faith who loved her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, with all her heart. Her faith sustained her through life’s joys and challenges. For more than 25 years, she courageously battled cancer with remarkable strength, perseverance, and trust in God. Through every trial, she remained steadfast in her faith and an inspiration to those around her.

Today, Debbie’s family rejoices in the promise of eternal life through Jesus Christ. Though she will be deeply missed, they find comfort in knowing that she is now free from pain, healed and whole, enjoying a glorified body in the presence of her Lord and Savior. Her legacy of faith, love, compassion, and devotion to family will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 6:00 PM, Thursday, June 25, 2026 at Clary-Glenn Funeral Home Chapel; 230 Park Avenue, DeFuniak Springs, Florida 32435 with a Eulogy by Joe Proffitt.
