Betty Jean
Martin Henry
April 8, 1940 – January 27, 2026
Betty Jean Martin Vandeven Henry was born April 8, 1940 in Muskegon, Michigan to Florence Mae Martin and Harold Bergman Martin. Her siblings who preceded her in death are Shirley Durka, Donna VanMunster, Harold B Martin, Jr. and Carol Lee Jaunese.
In 1963 she married William (Bill) Joseph Vandeven, who preceded her in death in 1972. Betty raised all of their 10 children, three of whom preceded her in death; Debra Munoz, Mark Vandeven and Paul Vandeven. Betty is survived by her remaining children; Catherine Scott, Christine Jaquette, Mary Vandeven, Leigh Hogan, William Vandeven, Victoria Hughes, and Pamela Warner. She is also survived by 19 grandchildren, and many great and great, great grandchildren. In 1982 Betty married Arthur B Henry who gave her three lovely stepchildren; Burt Henry, Doug Henry, and Tammy Henry.
Betty was a professional diver in the late 1950s and early 1960s helping train Navy seals when the seals first were created in 1962. Additionally, she dove for sport and treasure diving. After getting married in 1963, she became a full-time housewife and an amazing mother. Early in her marriage to Bill she became involved in politics which lasted throughout her life. She was part of the Walton County Executive Committee for the Republican Party. Betty was also a member of the Lions Club and BBC Club in Defuniak, and an active participant in the community, as well as belonging to a couple of lovely women's groups.
In her free time she enjoyed painting, antiquing, and spending time with her family. After growing up in Michigan, she lived in Chicago for 20 years before she moved to Florida. She lived in Pinellas Park, FL for 17 years before moving to Walton County, Florida in 1999, where she lived in Blue Mountain Beach with her husband Art Henry. .
Betty passed away on January 27, 2026 at The Manor in Bluewater Bay, Niceville, FL.
Graveside Service will be held at 2:00 PM, Sunday, February 8, 2026 at the Historic Gulf Cemetery; South County Hwy 393, Santa Rosa Beach, FL 32459 .
