Obituary

Barbara Tena Barendregt Adams, a beloved matriarch, passed away peacefully at the age of 93 on Saturday, July 27, 2024, in DeFuniak Springs, FL. Born on March 19, 1931, in East Grand Rapids, MI, Barbara was the daughter of Gysbert and Bertha DeGraaf Barendregt.

Barbara's energetic and industrious approach to life will be remembered fondly by her two sons, David Jones (Brenda) of Freeport, FL, and Darrell Adams (Marilynn) of DeFuniak Springs, FL; and her daughter Janell Usher (George) of DeFuniak Springs, FL; and her daughter-in-law Lisa Adams of DeFuniak Springs, FL.

Her legacy lives on through her seven grandchildren: Clint Usher (Adrienne), Wes Usher (Jennifer), Lorretta Petruncio (Tim), Casey Jones (Carey), Jessica Adams Rockett, Brittany Adams, and Zach Adams; as well as her great-grandchildren Nowles Hampton Usher, Justin Usher, Griffin Usher, Graysen Usher Burke, Lilliana Petruncio, Arryana Petruncio, Kayla Jones, Katelyn Jones and Arya Rockett; and two great-great-grandchildren, Adelynn Usher and Vivian Usher.

Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, W.D. Adams and her first husband Vibbert Jones; her sons Bernard Jones and Dewey Adams; her infant grandchild, Crystal Jones; her sisters Irene Fitzpatrick and Georgia Mann; and her brother William "Bill" Barendregt.

A woman of simple, yet profound joys, Barbara loved nothing more than sitting down with a good book and a cup of coffee, surrounded by her animals. She was an active woman who loved the outdoors, whether she was walking her land with her dogs and cats or gardening and tending her beautiful lawn. She was an avid quilter and seamstress as well.

In keeping with her wishes, there will be no public memorial service. Instead, the family will celebrate her remarkable life privately. To honor her memory and her passion for reading and animals, the family kindly requests that donations be made to either the Florala Public Library, (1214 N 4th St, Florala, AL 36442) or the Alaqua Animal Refuge (155 Dugas Way, Freeport, FL 32439). Barbara's frequent visits to the library and her affection for the dedicated staff will always be remembered with warmth and gratitude. And she certainly loved her animals, including all of the stray cats that knew they could always get food and water at her house.

The family wishes to thank you for your condolences and for understanding our need to celebrate and honor her life privately as a family.
